THE PHANTOM PIRATE by Syd Nicholls, published in 1943 by Syd Nicholls. This is another of the upscale pirate albums Nicholls produced over the years. It contains two Phantom Pirate stories, a character that had already appeared in ‘Fatty Finn’s Comic’. There is speculation that these pages were full-page newspaper strips, although it was Nicholls’ inability to find a newspaper willing to print his pirate stories that led to his self-publishing. Great artwork by Syd Nicholls, and a great pleasure to read a 1943 Wartime Australian book in full colour. The regular short page count leaves something to be desired in the pacing, however, with a lot of narrative, and mostly scenes of meeting new people that drop into the story, and otherwise battles with new villains who enter out of nowhere and drop out shortly after.
I'd surely hate to be wearing an iron mask on my face while in The Tropics.
