CLIMAX ALL COLOR COMIC 4 is an anthology comic published by KG Murray in 1947. This anthology consists of an Australian original lead story, featuring RED CARR by Rich Cocks, along with three American reprints. These stories are printed in colour. There is a single-page humour strip, SPLINTER by Jim Borella Swan (an Australian original), and two American reprint single-page strips printed in blue and white. Details of the original printings of the US material appear below. Climax All Color Comic features a changing array of features from issue to issue. Red Carr makes two other appearances, and Splinter appears a number of times, and is essentially humorous filler to meet page count requirements. Jim Borella Swan was interested in cartooning from a young age, contributing to competitions in the Sunbeams supplement of the Sunday Sun from 10 years of age. (The Sunbeams section was intended for younger readers, and included comic strips.) He made his first commercial sale of cartoons at 17. During his military service, he regularly contributed military-themed cartoons to The Bulletin. Later, he contributed mostly one-page humorous strips for the use of the KG Murray Publishing Company.

Thanks Dan for uploading this rare Golden Age Australian comic book. I find it interesting that KG Murray was able to publish several comic books in full colour after 1946, and pay for colouring and pay Australian artists for drawing locally-produced stories, while only filling part of those books with US-produced stories.

Rich Cocks is a bit of a mystery. He wrote and drew two series (Red Carr in Climax All Color Comic, and boxing champion Kid Gloves in Hurricane Comics (mostly). Speculation suggests he was a commercial artist with a side job, or the pen name of another artist (the only reference to an artist of approximately this name, R Sydney Cocks, a watercolour painter, was found to Robert rather than Rich or Richard). His comics are in the old-fashioned style of an illustration with a text box at the bottom, common in early Australian and British comics. Whatever else, Rich Cocks is the king of nominative determinism - he has a racing car drive called Red Carr and a boxer called Kid Gloves.
