"Ballyhoo" demonstrates how smart the old MAD magazine was not to run ads. Sometimes it's impossible to know whether an ad is a genuine advertisement or a parody. The Ex-Lax ad on our page 27, claiming a wallflower can become popular by taking a laxative, is apparently genuine. But it's so stupid, and it's illustrated by Jefferson Machamer, a "Ballyhoo" regular. It could easily be a parody. Then there's the full-page Falstaff Press ad, offering naughty books to "America's Sophisticated Intellectual Aristocracy." Genuine. Finally check out (on our page 30) the ad for "Clover Rye or Gin [Flavors]" to be added to "whatever 'ingredients' you habitually use." Another real ad that reads like a parody. It reminds me of the "Mad" knockoffs with ads for shrunken heads and the like which the publisher felt compelled to label "REAL AD."
