William Lackey, the artist, painted murals for the WPA before World War II. After the war he and his wife Joy organized art studios in the Midwest. These shops produced commercial art including comic books. Lackey worked extensively for Catholic publishers as well as illustrating scholarly books on anthropology. A review of his career is here: http:wpamurals.org/lackey.htm
