Yes, this is a doctored reprint of Toby's "John Wayne Adventure Comics" #1 from 1949. I guess Toby had lost the rights to JW's name/likeness so they had to rename him for the reprint. Funny that the shape of Wayne's name is still visible in the yellow splotch in the first panel.

Might be yellow, could be a poor depiction of John Wayne, but I enjoyed this. All a bit daft in places. Fortunately, good action, good bad guys and a very peculiar villain in Nero.

I have to credit Toby's artist(s) -- their depiction of John Wayne is generally recognisable, unlike quite a few of the other Western-star comics whose characters often resembled the actual people very slightly if at all. This was even more obvious because the covers often used photographs of the real actors.
