I know Archie superheroes are notoriously ludicrous, but getting them all in one book, facing off with equally idiotic supervillains, is utterly stupifying. My brain hurts from reading this! I marvel at the type of mind that could come up with such atrocious ideas and consider it a job well done. That so many people could work together to produce and publish work of this quality is truly amazing. ????

So, it's the early 60's and your reading FF Avengers, X-men and the JLA. Can we have more of this. Oh look, MLJ is getting into the act. What a disappointment. It's clear Jerry Siegel - who can write - made the mistake of slavishly coping Stan Lee with a bit of Gardner Fox thrown in. Disharmony and misunderstanding amongst the heroes. Check. Heroes fight clones, copies or villains with equivalent powers. Check. Corney dialogue. check Emphasise women are girly - make up, (vanity) looks, flirting. Check 3 acts, chaos and confusion in the second act, Victory in the third with friction between the heroes. Check. problem #1. Jerry Siegel is not Stan Lee or Gardner Fox. Paul Reinman is not Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko or even Mile Sekowsky. Problem # 2 All the Avengers were introduced in their own books over a year before. The JLA heroes all had their own strips or books well before. At that time most of us had no clue who these MLJ characters were. No effort had been put into developing them into whole characters before they were jumbled together. They were not reconstructed for the times. Result - a hell of a mess. Unfortunately, these characters have been tried several times since, but, in my opinion, the damage has never been undone. A tragedy.

No, no, no, please!!! These were my first view of Archie heroes. Just like Reuben reuben, and I loved all those heroes in the MC issues. Particularly Too Many Super Heroes, which idea I think Marvel pinched and used in The Defenders. I know the whole thing is poor stuff but at that time, something new to me, colourful, obscure, and different. I do love the obscure. These Archie comics started me on the trail of finding out more, which became much easier when computers became available to most people. Just thinking that Sekowsky's rendering of DC heroes in early JLA wasn't much better than the look of these Archie heroes. JLA had weird big shoulders and strange postures.
