Eugene Hughes
was another artist who mostly never bothered to show what he was capable of. The composed excellent covers but never bothered much about the interior storys. Maybe the rate of pay was pretty low?

The pay rate for "non-star" comic book artists was pretty low back then, as it was all through the history of American comic books, from the artist staffs working for the comic book studios/packagers that supplied small publishers like Stanley Morse, as compared with what accomplished illustrators could get from working on magazines, children's books, advertising, and other illustration work, as well as working for animation studios. Most comic book artiosts from the 1940s through all the way to today, HAD to supplement their income (or, indeed, make most of it) from working on advertising, book illustration, and/or for animation studios. That includes myself, and just about every story and magazine/comic book front cover artist, storyboarder, penciler, inker, and comic book storywriter I ever knew, including ALL my colleagues.
