Buster Brown Comics
« on: September 27, 2008, 03:37:13 AM »

Since we're going to have access to a lot of new Buster Brown scans, I thought I'd make a place to talk about them. One of the first things you notice about the title is that there are NO DATES. Well, long ago I carefully went through all of my issues and discovered that they were a regularly published quarterly. You can tell from the Easter and Christmas ads. In one issue there was a contest of sorts with a deadline in issue #42 (Easter of 1956) that allowed me to determine pretty accurately the dates of each issue. Rather than list each one, I will tell you that the first issue was probably Fall of 1945.

#11 was Easter of 1948
#21 was Fall of 1950
#31 was Summer of 1953
#41 was Christmas of 1955

You can work out the intermediary issue dates without too much trouble.

I just entered comments with issue dates and art IDs for the first five issues. Does anyone find these helpful, desirable, useful? Should I continue or is it just extra baggage on the scans? I didn't try to ID the funny animal/cartoony types as I don't know enough about them to make even a guess.

I index for the GCD so of course I think the info is worthwhile. What percent certain are you on your art IDs?
As you know we put ? on not sures. So it would be useful to know how sure you are. JIM

Jim,
The index comments add much toward the full value of a scan.
If that is considered extra baggage I would think to go ahead and pay for the extra suitcase or two.

I included the scan of the index card on Buster #1.  All of the other Busters were previously scanned and I didn't have Jim's cards to scan.  I did recognize Reed Crandall's artwork in many of the later issues.

If you look at the comments/IDs, Narf
You'll see that I, too, am VERY big on question marks and labeling guesses. If there is no question mark or qualifying phrase, you can count on it as a certainty. If that comes across as a bit "full of it", well, so be it. I either know or I know that I don't know, and if someone else can add to the info, I'll the one who is most grateful.

I've just finished packing/preparing for the flight tomorrow and will "relax" by entering some more comments to the Buster Browns. I've got my box of comics here and it's so much faster to enter them here than it is waiting on the GCD to get back to me after thinking about stuff of minutes at a time.

Great Jim I just saw the one card.  I do not consider it full of it when you know something.  There are some that I can ID but not many.

Check out the comments on issues 2-15, Narf,
and tell me if you can add anything or would like to see the data entered differently. I'm afraid that these might be all I have time for, but I'll try to do a few more before I retire tonight. Any feedback will be appreciated.

Info is great Jim.  I have not checked the GCD to see what info is already there. I will pull up the series with the editor tool and I can add anything new and upload it back all at once.  Sure beats waiting between each sequence. Sparling is usually one of the easier to identify especially if he does his own inks.  I assume if you only list one name it is pencil and ink. I am going off of what Jon has put of your information on the file info without downloading each book. I have quite a few of BB myself.

Thanks, narf,
but how come the GCD works for you but not for me? I'm some sort of jinx whenever in comes to GCD-dom.

C'est la vie.

Basically it works when it works and that is not often. I sometimes get lucky.
