New Here, And How I Found This Site.
« on: July 16, 2018, 01:48:42 PM »

I discovered this wonderful treasure-trove of old comics, most of which I had never heard of, only last week.
I had purchased a copy of Golden Age Sheena:The Best of Sheena Queen Of the Jungle Volume One , published by Galaxy Publishing and Devil's Due, from Abebooks, and saw all the references to Jungle Comics. So I googled Jungle Comics and found this site. Feel so fortunate.
I have always been a fan of jungle adventure stuff, whether books, movies,TV. Tarzan,  Sheena, Jungle Jim, Ramar of the Jungle, and so on. Own numerous books and dvds of that genre.
I don't remember a lot of those old comics,  for by the time I came of age to read well, there had been the Wertham crusade and pretty much all I knew were Dell and DC.
My favorites were westerns(this was the era of cowboy TV shows) and jungle adventure, and some superheroes(i watched the George Reeves Suoerman on TV), lots of cartoon characters, many of which had their own TV shows, like Popeye and Yogi Bear.
My favorite comics were probably the Lone Ranger and Jungle Jim, too bad that little or none of those are publlic domain.
By time I reached high school I had pretty much lost interest in comics. Though not in literature devoted to the fantastic, the mysterious, exotic settings, prehistory, whatever. In the 60s the Edgar Rice Burroughs books came out in paperback, there was Tolkien, and a friend in college introduced me to H.P. Lovecraft. Found an Ace Books Conan on a convenience store paperback rack and got hooked on Robert E. Howard, which led me to further exploration of pulps writers.
Again, delighted to be here and look forward to reading some wonderful old/new stories.

Hello Hawkbrother and welcome to CB+.
You're in luck as an awful lot of the jungle comics are p.d. But I'm not a fan of jungle comics or heroes, apart, that is, from The Phantom, and he appeals to my superhero addiction. Do you have The Phantom movie serial, and it's sort of sequel, Captain Africa?  The Phantom is great fun.  Captain Africa isn't, but worth a look anyway.
Over here in the U.K. we had a lot of American western shows but I preferred Cheyenne, Bronco and Wells Fargo to The Lone Ranger.  Our home made shows were more historical adventures like The Buccaneers; Sword of Freedom; William Tell; Ivanhoe; Sir Lancelot, and so on.
Have a look at a British comic featuring a jungle hero; Halcon, drawn by the excellent Nat Brand, pen name of Len Fullerton.  You'll find some examples here:-

Oh yes, the Phantom, one of my favorite comic strips in the Washington Post when  I was a boy. Don't see any here, assume it must not be public domain. Believe there was a Phantom movie some years back.
Remember Cheyenne comics too and watching Tales of Wells Fargo starring Dale Robertson on TV.
Wells Fargo Bank uses a stagecoach as its  logo in tribute to the history of their name.

Welcome Hawkbrother. Love the Avatar! Like Paw I am not a huge fan of Jungle Comics, but I go for Art and story, so will check out work by guys like Matt Baker. The Phantom is still going strong but not in the US market hence not P.D.
Check out this site for Frew comics Australia, currently going through something like a phantom Renaissance.

Most new phantom stories have for decades been published by Egmont. Here's a link.

My Avatar character was a phantom-like jungle character, not to be found on CB+ at this time, unfortunately.
An aside. Re the TV shows Paw mentions, many of which can be found on YouTube, most would not be aware that some of the scriptwriters working on these shows in the UK in the 50's, had been blacklisted during the McCarthy hearings in the US. Ever noticed that 'Sword of Freedom; William Tell; Ivanhoe; Sir Lancelot and Robin Hood all feature brave individuals fighting an evil establishment, often with a villain like the Sheriff of Nottingham or Gessler? Now you know why! Who says popular entertainment is all escapism?
Anyway, welcome and enjoy

Welcome brother. I regret to inform you that you must return your nerd card. You lost interest in comics in high school. That revokes your privileges.  ;D
