First of all, my sincere thanks to whoever it was recommended the Mamur Zapt mysteries (Michael Pearce) to me (was that Paw?). I’ve read two so far and loved them – there are similarities to Inspector Chafik – mid-east location, for example, though set in an earlier period. I can’t believe I hadn’t discovered them earlier.
Always a pleasure to read Chafik – his personality shines through. What a magnificent cover on this one and a truly beguiling first story – marvellous line work as always in SPL, embedded in realistic settings – and a terrific final frame.
The second story was equally good – a complex narrative with a neat twist at the end. Good to see Leila in a larger role too.
