Charlton Lee's Dick Turpin info needed
« on: December 25, 2013, 01:42:23 AM »

An elderly friend has a book of about 1000 pages with 40 stories about Dick Turpin . There is no date of publishing as the cover has been replaced . The pages are quite thin and fragile. The book size is 6 1/2 inches in width by 9 1/2 inches long. Each story has a 2 name heading such as the 1st being DRIVEN FROM HOME : DICK AND THE BLACK BEES SEEK FAME AND FORTUNE . At the beginning of every new story there is a drawn picture with written by Charlton Lee . There are also advertisements for other 1 penny stories also The first advertisement is for 6/- sewing machines , Derma Tonic, The Birkbeck Bank . He would like to know about this book before he passes away and  hand it to his son as his father handed it down to him back in England in 1939. Any information would be very much appreciated. Thank you

I have looked on Ebay, which I am sure you might have too, and there are listed a few books with this character. One was titled "The Blue Dwarf and Dick Turpin". It does show illustrations that fold out. You might check it out and contact the owner. They are asking $85 for it, so there may be an interesting history about it. A wee bit more info. for you.  Aldine published the Dick Turpin "pulp":-
  http://ukcomics.wikia.com/wiki/Dick_Turpin_%28Aldine%29
The series was reprinted by Newnes:-

and there is an example of Dick Turpin on CB+:-

Just found this which might clear up some of the questions.  Scroll down to the penny dreadful cover illo, Black Bess, for the info. on the early books:-

and I think this book on Abe Books site is from the same series as the one you have:-

You can read another issue here:-
