Wayne in 1953 was 46 years old and visually a different man than the one in the later films we mostly know his image from.
True, The cover image is lousy on this one, but drawing a real person's likeness was one thing Jack Sparling could do. Look through the series and you will see what I mean. One the other hand, the Wayne stories by Frazetta and Williamson, while wonderful art (of course) aren't quite as good at getting Wayne's image right. That's my opinion and I'm stickin' to it, Podner!
