How could I resist the ‘Houdini’ story? It’s quite clearly Lovecraft, of course - with its origins in a normal, and very interesting, travelogue - before building slowly towards the eldritch mountains of madness. How much more interesting it would be if instead of the boring heads we currently have, we had the heads of animals instead? I think I would choose the head of a raven – how about you?
On Panther’s hint, I then jumped to the erudite The Man Who Lived Next Door to Himself. It’s a terrific plot with an electric ending – I don’t want to give too much away but I will ask – have you never imagined what it might be like to inhabit the body and life of someone else?
