There’s always so much to choose from in the daily twelve, it becomes really hard to make that choice.

This one’s a gem – a children’s comic from Romania, 1955. The opening poem begins:

“Do you know who saved us
From chains and bondage?
It was the Soviet Union!
Let’s thank those heroic soldiers
Of the Soviet Union!”

Gripping stuff for eight-year-olds, I’m sure. The rest of the comic is in much the same vein – about the need to do good deeds, help one another, honour those who work on the land, in the factories and the cities - be proud of how rapidly the country was being developed.

A narrative poem sidesteps into China and how the evil serf-owning landlords were overthrown so that everyone in China is now free and equal – Romania was very close to China in the fifties.

There were also rhymes and puzzles and clearly a jolly good time is had by all.
