Today is the 75th anniversary of Giles - the daily cartoon that captured the trials and tribulations of an average middle-class family:

An annual collection is still published - but it's odd really that it was not continued by a different cartoonist after the death of Carl Giles in 1991 - perhaps that typical middle-class family of mum+dad, a clutch of kids, indomitable gran (how did grandad pass away one wonders) dog and cat no longer exists.

Carl was an interesting character. A member of the Coldstream Guards who liberated Belsen-Bergen, he was given the task of interviewing Josef Kramer, camp commandment, only to discover Josef was a fan of his cartoons and creepily knowledgeable about his career. Carl promised to send Josef a signed cartoon in exchange for Josef's Walther PP7 and SS armband

Carl never did but it didn't matter as Josef was hanged a year later by British hangman Albert Pierrepoint in Hamelin Town (that's in Brunswick by the way, where the River Weser, deep and wide.....)
