The "saucer" looks like a jet powered version of the "Flying Pancake" STOL fighter.
While the Ram Jet offered extreme high speeds I doubt it would ever have been suited to aerial combat.
The Germans tried adapting the pulse jet of the V-1 missile to use on lightweight expendable interceptors without success.

The poorly kept secret of Russian pilots flying Chinese Migs has been confirmed by surviving Russian pilots of the day. In that way the story here is a bit ahead of its time.
