An interesting view of the lack of knowledge of the effects of nuclear weapons that existed during the 1950s Cold War.

I remember all too well the school drills and the testing of the air raid sirens (every Wednesday at  noon!). Even as kids, none of us really believed any of this would keep us safe.
Many years later, my brother and I got a Summer job cleaning out all the local air raid shelters. Sold some of the gasmasks to the local Army surplus store. The ration packs contained Charms hard candy, which we ate, and 20 year old Lucky Strikes, which we tried to smoke. At least not all of this stuff was wasted! Cheers, Bowers

Ah yeas bend over put your head between your legs and do what comes natural under the circumstances.

In the 80's a local store had a few cartons of Picayune cigarettes that had been lost in the store room for decades. They offered them at $1 per carton. I picked up a carton and found them to be pretty raw.
I gave them to a friend , he couldn't smoke them either. His neighbor came over to bum a cigarette and we told him these were pretty strong. He said "I smoke 4 packs of Kools a day, I can handle anything". He lit one up, took one drag, then collapsed unconcious and unable to breath. My friend had to do PCR on him.
