Edgar Allan Poe

Here is a good print of a movie of a not so well known Poe short story.

Mystery Of Marie Roget 1942

Quote
he Mystery of Marie Roget is a 1942 mystery film starring Patric Knowles. The story was adapted from the short story "The Mystery of Marie Rogêt" written by Edgar Allan Poe in 1842. The film, directed by Phil Rosen and produced by Universal Pictures, is set in 1889.

enjoy!

I saw that once on Youtube and loved it.

A very strange aspect is, they repeatedly reference "The Murders in the Rue Morgue", as this film is intended as a sequel, yet, the main character is NOTHING like the version of the same character in the earlier movie.

I got the strong impression Universal may have been hoping to start a whole series of these, in the style of their SHERLOCK HOLMES films, with a smart scientist hero and a not-too-bright comedy best friend sidekick.  I'd have watched them!

Something I learned watching audio commentaries on Roger Corman's POE films, is that pretty much every one of them, the "new" sections, not based on Poe, were based on EARLIER non-Poe films! So, I put together a list of those films, now on my "wanted" list, so that when I get them, I'll be able to watch appropriate double-features.

THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER / BLACK NARCISSUS (1947)

PIT AND THE PENDULUM / LES DIABOLIQUES (1955)

THE PREMATURE BURIAL / GASLIGHT (1940 & 1944)
and THRILLER: "The Premature Burial" (1961)

TALES OF TERROR / OBRAS MAESTRAS DEL TERROR (Brazil / 1960)
(2 of the 3 stories were the same in both films!)

THE HAUNTED PALACE / ONE STEP BEYOND: "The Captain's Guests" (1959)

THE COMEDY OF TERRORS / THE BARBARA STANWYCK SHOW: "Dear Charlie" (1961)

THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH / THE SEVENTH SEAL (1957)

THE TOMB OF LIGEIA / THE HORRIBLE DR. HICHCOCK (1962)

THE OBLONG BOX / THE KILLERS (1964)

Some Poe films are based on multiple short stories, not always by Poe, and some may not have been adapted otherwise. I just found out days ago that DANZA MACABRE / CASTLE OF BLOOD (1964) was apparently based on "The Haunters and the Hunted" by Bullwer-Lytton (1859), which was 10 years after Poe died... so I found it online at The Project Gutenberg site and bookmarked it so I can read it when I get a chance! This stuff just fascinates me.

Oh yeah... and just yesterday... I noticed that the "bathtub" scene in MASQUE may have been inspired by a very-similar scene in-- get this-- MY FAIR LADY. The film version of the play came out the SAME year as Corman's movie... except, Jane Asher didn't complain as much as Audrey Hepburn.

A favourite of ours, Les Diaboliqes. Simon Signoret is excellent.  Terrific story and never give away the "shock".  We both got the fright of our lives the first time we watched it. Go find it everyone, you'll love it, unless your ticker stops ticking.
Thanks Prof, I didn’t know there was a Poe connection.

TALES OF TERROR / OBRAS MAESTRAS DEL TERROR (Brazil / 1960)
(2 of the 3 stories were the same in both films!)

Obras Maestras del Terror (Masterworks of Terror) is actually Argentinian, and I've been searching for a good copy with English subtitles for ages. Two of the stories (The Case of M. Valdemar and A Cask of Amontillado) plus part of the framing story of a housemaid reading a Poe collection were dubbed into English and released as Master of Horror (1965). The third story (The Tell-Tale Heart) was worked into the 1972 film Legend of Horror as a flashback.

There is a poor copy of the original movie in Spanish, no subtitles, at Internet Archive. I couldn't find any subtitles for it at opensubtitles.org.  - https://archive.org/details/obras-maestras-del-terror-1960

Here's Master of Horror, good quality: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_Bdhyp-URM

Legend of Horror is on Tubi, if you have access to that: https://tubitv.com/movies/601982/legend-of-horror
It's actually a dreadful movie, so skip ahead to about 16:20 or so to go straight to The Tell-Tale Heart

“Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door —
Only this, and nothing more."

Saw that on my own when a was 12 or 13. Sneaked into a theater in Brisbane that specialized in 'continental' films.
Never forgotten the shock and it also made me a lifetime fan of European film.
