Pardon me for being feeble minded, but why does the red plate reproduce darker in black and white than the blue plate?

Blue is a lighter color than red.

Years ago when reproducing my art on an old black and white scanner I would pencil with non-photo blue pencils (which was too light to be scanned) and ink with red ink which scanned as black. It's an old known effect and there's probably a technical explanation somewhere on the web.
