Mopee, if you ask me I think the character was supposed to be a girl and something got messed up. Consider that the character is named Tanya, typically a girl's name in comics. What's more, there seems to be extra space in the balloons each time Tanya is called "lad." A possible explanation: Tanya was originally a girl. Mayo pencilled the strip (perhaps very loosely?) and the lettering was done with Tanya called "girl" rather than "lad." For some reason Mayo finished the kid as a boy, heaven knows why, and turns in the art. Editor sees this mistake and freaks out. He hasn't the time or the inclination to have half the story panels redrawn. Editor orders dialogue re-lettered to make Tanya a boy. Editor calls Mayo and cusses him out.

I liked "Man's First Boat". It reminded me od the Dolphins being asked why they always had that silly grin. They said they grinned like that because the first time they saw a human he was paddling out to sea on a log looking for something to eat.
