I would like to put Public Domain Comics on iPod/iPhones
« on: June 04, 2010, 12:34:24 PM »

Recently I've been reading Silver Age comics from Marvel on my iPod. Because of the way the comic panels were designed back then, they actually ready very well - much better than modern comics with their crazy broken panel designs. On the ComiXology app, you can read a comic panel by panel, and the old Lee/Kirby and Lee/Ditko stuff looks great this way.

It occurred to me that some of the older Public Domain comics would work well in this format too.

I thought it might be cool to port some old issues of some Public Domain comics to the iPhone. ComicZeal already offers a ton of Public Domain comics via its application, but the reading experience isn't panel by panel like the ComiXology app, so it leaves something to be desired.

What I would like to do is test the waters as it were and see if some of the scanners on this board would be open to me reapportion some of the scans on this site for this purpose.

NOTE: I would be glad to credit everyone involved, offer the scans for free or sell them and give all proceeds to the original scanner. I'm not in this for money  - cuz if that's the goal, this is the wrong industry ;)

I volunteer if I get a free Ipad!    ;)  ;D

Actually, I am much more a supporter of the full-page approach, and will likely buy an ipad for just that reason.  The idea of a file server with wireless distribution, and the ability to take my ipad throughout my house and sit in an easy chair or on the porch, while having my comic library at my disposal seems like Nirvana to me.

I don't have direct experience with the ComiXology app. Does the source material need to be re-formatted to separate jpgs per panel?

Lenovia "had" a laptop coming out with removable touch screen monitor that would act very much like an ipad. I really believe Apple paid them a large sum of money to table the idea. I think it was to come out in April. I believe it will come out eventually and I would much rather have it than an ipad and it will be much cheaper originally projected at $1000 for essentially a laptop and ipad together

Ha! I don't think I can promise free iPads, but stick around for a year or two - I suspect the competition from other vendors will drive the price of the iPad down very quick. I've already heard of Android Tablets in the $200 price range.

As to the ComiXology app, yeah, it requires that you do some funky formatting with the pages using Layers and Shapes Masks so that they can automagically do their neat panel by panel tweening.

I would like the same thing for Public Domain comics.
