Hi everyone!
This time I posted a shorter compilation, just a little less than 30 pages, about a bizarre character I stumbled upon while making my Amazing Man compilation. He's a bit of an unusual superhero, both for his powers and his modus operandi: he carries around a radio-like device that enables him to completely remove light and heat around him. He's one of the most original superheroes I've ever seen, honestly.

Here's the link to the compilation:

Enjoy!

I think this idea was used in a movie serial, TheInvisible Monster? The ray machine was in the back of a truck and when the henchmen trained the beam on the villan, he became invisible.
I need to re-watch The Purple Monster Strikes 'cos I seem to remember something similar in that one. But it's been a while since I saw either.
Lovely stuff Fra.  Obscure is so good.

FraBig, thanks for this compilation. A quirky superhero with bizarre powers--you can't beat that! I wonder how useful his gimmick would have been in the long run, given the giant column of blackness that followed him around. He wouldn't have had much luck sneaking up on crooks. It's funny how King gets a smackeroo from the movie star ("That's the first real reward this invention has brought me!") and that ends his career. I've heard rumors that King and Gloria Glamour married and he retired from crime fighting to go into the frozen food business.

Thanks everyone! Glad you liked this one.

I love your theory, Ryan! Seems like a fitting ending for such a bizarre and short superhero career! ;D

First time I ever went to see a film, [By myself, I must have been 8 or 9 - small country town]  I don't remember the film, but I do remember the serial, 'Deadwood Dick'
Which unfortunately is on YouTube only in single chapters.
Deadwood Dick Chapter 1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IdYBV0m2PRE

I love these things! There are quite a lot on YouTube.

Re Serials, John Wayne made serials, here are three.
Three Musketeers (1933) | Complete Serial | All 12 Chapters
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jm-UCJwQ8pw
Actually a french foreign legion type story. And this is an excellent print.

Shadow of the Eagle
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyaFRxNiRig

Hurricane Express (1932) | Complete Serial - All 12 Chapters | John Wayne
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRomHlBTV7I

Frabig, here's one for you.
Whispering Shadow (1933) | Complete Serial - All 12 Chapters | Bela Lugosi

A mysterious criminal known as The Whispering Shadow commits crimes by means of a gang he controls by television and radio rays. Jack Norton, whose brother was murdered by The Whispering Shadow, suspects that the eerie Professor Strang - whose ghostly wax museum contains figures far too lifelike - may be involved in the crimes.

You can bet that the artists and writers of the Golden Age would have sat in theaters and been influenced by these serials.

It just occurred to me that we have another member of Darkness royalty onsite: the Duke of Darkness, an oddball supernatural hero. So we have the King of Darkness and the Duke of Darkness...that still leaves room for the Earl of Darkness, the Count of Darkness and of course the Queen, Princess and Duchess of Darkness.

Speaking of the DoD, one of my favorite fourth-wall-breaking lines comes from his first story. The police arrest the Duke and he sasses back at them, leading one of the cops to think, "All these comic book heroes think they are better than the police force. Bah! Oh, well, at least he's not a Captain Something-or-Other." Collection here:

Here's a new compilation, another step forward in my project to compile every single MLJ superhero. This time it's Captain Commando, one of the few patriotic MLJ superheroes (together with the Shield and Captain Flag).
Much like DC Comics' Guardian, he is aided by a group of teenagers called the Boy Soldiers. In Guardian's case they're called the Newsboy Legion. Seems like it was a common trope to have a group of teenage fans of a superhero follow him during his adventures. A similar situation happened with Golden Age Mr. Terrific, too.

The art is for the most part by Irv Novick, one fo the main artists at MLJ and one of my Golden Age favourites.

I'm really glad you're enjoying my work, Hex!

I'm currently working on a compilation about a Lev Gleason character, but I'm not sure when I'll manage to finish it, stay tuned!

Hi everyone!
I've just uploaded a new compilation, it stars a Lev Gleason superhero called Thirteen, and his sidekick Jinx. It features nice art by Bernard Klein, and the concept behind the superhero is overall pretty original.

Hi everyone!
As you have seen, I've uploaded a new compilation: another step forward in my project of compiling every MLJ character. This time it's the Fox, a character with few appearances compared to other MLJ heroes, but still fairly popular. The collection features mostly art by Warren King, who will take the character in the latter part of his publication history. I think this time King's art is remarkably good, compared to his other works for MLJ  (e.g. Firefly or Bob Phantom). He's also responsible for redefining the character's design in his most iconic, Batman Beyond looking costume.

Here's the compilation, hope you'll enjoy it!

Or does 'Batman Beyond' have a 'Fox' looking costume?
I have a perverse mind.

Hi everyone!

I just uploaded a new compilation, this time it was suggested by a user who commented some time ago for a new Lady Satan compilation. She's a pretty interesting character, and the art is very good in almost every appearance. The first few have George Tuska art, who's the creator of the character. I'll paste the link here as soon as it will be available.

Here's the link:

Thanks for this collection. Lady Satan's assignments certainly changed between Dynamic and Red Seal comics. I presume she took up ghost hunting when the War ended. One odd item caught my eye. In the first story whenever Lady Satan's name appears there is an over-long space between "Lady" and "Satan," like this: LADY    SATAN! Her first name was re-lettered before publication. My theory: she was originally named Madam (or Madame) Satan. Chesler's Dynamic Comics #2 was cover-dated December 1941. A character named Madam Satan debuted in MLJ's Pep Comics #16, dated June 1941. Could be that at the last moment someone saw the MLJ magazine on the stands and told Chesler that a Madam Satan already existed, so the heroine's name was changed to Lady Satan?
