Please help me understand download limits
« on: September 12, 2010, 01:03:16 AM »

Hello.

I am thoroughly enjoying the comics, and despite unemployment I guess I could turn up a few bucks to donate, although there seems to be some confusion in this forum about whether I should or not or how or what.  I could use some advice on that.

I bump into download limits once in a while.  It says that the Control Panel will tell me where I am timewise, but it doesn't -- all there is is zeroes.  I've seen "Daily limit", "Weekly limit", and "Monthly limit" mentioned in various places on this site.  None of this adds up to me.

What is the limit amount?
What is the limit timeout?
What happens if I donate whatever I can afford?
What happens if that isn't enough?
What else do I need to know that I haven't thought of?

Thank you kindly.

What is the limit amount? -- I always suggest a $10 minimum. I will not upgrade anyone for less because it makes no sense for the server, and in a moral sense, consider what is offered here, $5 might buy you a nice big bump, but not unlimited downloading.

What is the limit timeout? -- When you can no longer download. It is that simple.

What happens if I donate whatever I can afford? -- See the answer to your first question.

What happens if that isn't enough? -- Again, see the answer to your first question.

What else do I need to know that I haven't thought of? -- Have you read the GAC F.A.Q.? Many people prefer to ignore it and shower us with complaints -- that is fair enough, but much of the problems we've encountered is from people who did not read the GAC F.A.Q. even halfway. When in doubt, read the GAC F.A.Q.! If one is not going to do that, then posting like you did is a good route also.

I guess I'm stupid, I don't get this at all:

I meant how much downloaded material trips the "You have exceeded your limit and can't download any more".  If I download 50 meg or 100 meg or 6 files or what?

What is the limit timeout? -- When you can no longer download. It is that simple.

It doesn't make sense to me that when I hit the download limit and get disabled, the shutout extends until I can't download any more...  I thought you'd say I'd be shut down for "a day" or "a week" or something like that...

There's a limit on both the size of the downloads and the total number of downloads. For instance, if your limit is 200mb/150 files, you could download 150 1mb files or 4 50mb files before your limit is hit.

I kind of figured that you had not read the GAC F.A.Q. nor read the entire "HERE'S WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO TO START DOWNLOADING!" post. All of this is explained. You have to tell us for now...but all of that is covered. I even went and reloaded you for downloading, but you had to tell us until we have the upgrades online. Just read the GAC F.A.Q. and read the entire "HERE'S WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO TO START DOWNLOADING!" post -- honest, nothing would make sense to you unless you take a few moments to learn the lay of the land.

Actually I did read that and a whole bunch of similar posts here too, and a bunch of help threads that seemed to be related.  I think that the actual info is hidden in a thicket of comments and quoted previous comments, and some contradicting statements in other older posts.  And you know, a post entitled "Here's what you have to do to start downloading" might not be closely scrutinized by somebody who has been downloading for several months already.

So if this is the document that I should go by, timeout is a month. I still don't know how much material trips a timeout but maybe it's in there too, or behind some link that's in there. I should ignore the posts that say not to use Paypal, right?  This:

Paypal your donation to: donate@goldenagecomics.co.uk,

is currently correct, right?

Thanks

It still boils down to being willing to check the GAC F.A.Q. regardless of how long you've been a member. Nothing is static around here. Have you looked at my signature?

And if you are interested in donating: http://goldenagecomics.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,1725.msg25352.html#msg25352

You decide what is best for you, but the GAC F.A.Q. and the entire "HERE'S WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO TO START DOWNLOADING!" should be two items you read eventually.

Thank you for helping with this.

I just sent you some money.

Let me know if you don't see it arrive.

Best wishes,
