Is AI a reliable source?
« on: September 25, 2023, 03:06:52 PM »

I've been playing with some of the new artificial intelligence chatbots and search engines, and find that questions about comic books may induce hallucinations -- that is, the AI doesn't know the answer but makes something up.  For a quick example, Crime Busters costume was NOT bullet proof, no matter what the chatbot said.

Recently I tried to indulge something that amused me -- making a list of the comic book heroes who wore American Flag costumes.  The list I was given was: he Shield
The Flag
The Patriot
Americommando
The Star-Spangled Kid
Stripesy
Bucky
Miss Victory
The Minute-Man
Commander Steel
Captain America-X

Some of these seem debatable (Bucky's costume) but I'm more interested in learning whether there were any that the AI missed.  I can think of V Man and Fighting American offhand, but I'm sure I'm missing a few.  Any thoughts?

You didn't hear about the American lawyer who used AI to assemble a legal argument and it gave him made up cases? The judge was not happy.

I'm late to the party, but this is a list of Golden Age superheroes in the public domain that are patriotic and wear the colours of the star-spangled banner in some way or another.

The list was compiled by me and it's still a work in progress. The Public Domain Super Heroes wiki has been a very helpful instrument to make this. I plan to update it with also Marvel and DC superheroes from the Golden Age.

American Crusader
American Eagle (Nedor)

Boy Detective *

Captain Battle
Captain Commando
Captain Courageous
Captain Fight (Fiction House 1)
Captain Flag
Captain Freedom
Captain Red Cross
Captain Victory
Commando Yank
Conqueror

Dandy *
Daredevil Boy *
Dicky *

Eagle (Fox)
Eaglet (Nedor) *

Fighting Yank
Flag
Flag-Man
Four Comrades

Ghost of Flanders
Great Defender

Johnny Rebel

Liberator
Lone Warrior

Major Victory (Chesler)
Man of War
Marksman (Centaur)
Minute-Man
Miss America
Miss Victory

Nathan Hale *

Pat Patriot
Pioneer
Capt. V/Puppeteer

Rangers of Freedom
Rusty *
Rusty Ryan

Sentinel
Shield
Sparky (Harvey) *
Spirit of '76
Super-American
Super-Boy *

U.S. Jones
Uncle Sam (Quality)
Unknown Soldier
USA (Quality)

V-Boys *
V-Man

War Eagle
War Nurse

Yank & Doodle
Yankee Boy
Yankee Doodle Jones
Yankee Girl (Superior)

* sidekicks

As you can clearly see, sadly (or luckily, it depends ;)) A.I. is still not capable to compile such a list. Especially because most of these characters are definitely obscure and there's scarce information about them on the web.

The day may be coming when an AI will be able to be trained on the entire ComicBook+ archives! Already, AI can understand a comic to a limited degree. I've tested it by uploading a few comic pages to some of the chat bots and they do a pretty good job, but they almost always make some mistake or another. however, they are getting better and better as time goes on. Would you like classic a comic book expert as an AI?

!/ If you want to see AIs limitations, watch a movie on YouTube with the subtitles turned on. It doesn't understand the spaces between sentences or the emotional emphasis when people speak. It often puts the dialogue from one or more people together in run-on format. It also guesses a lot and often gets it wrong with hilarious results. Sometimes the subtitles are more entertaining than the movie.
2/ I don't believe we yet have real AI. What we have is VI (Virtual Intellience) which means it is not independent or even allowed to be really self-learning. It's always subject to being edited by whoever owns it.
Think about it. Do we really think that the CCP would let loose a program which was wholly independent and could make up its own mind? Please be serious.

Yeah, also, virtually all the AI's have a political bias too, and virtually all of them lean left! If they're not developed in China, they're developed in Silicon Valley...which is in California!  ::)

Nope.  I want nothing to do with AI.  Unfortunately, I can't avoid the crap. Spent ages trying to get it off my phone.

Yes. Because after half a century of relentless propaganda, a third of the country is convinced that even the softest, established middle-of-the-road fact is radical ultra-left antifa woke politically correct unAmerican etc. etc. etc. Now that the tech billionaires have lined up behind the current administration's drive to make the USA an autocratic kleptocracy, pear-clutchers can breathe a sigh of relief. Already search engines are being retrained with loads of reactionary talking points to "restore balance." The sort of balance that styles propaganda organs like Fox News as "fair and balanced." Soon, when someone asks a question online only the right answer will be spit out. AI and a billionaire-controlled Internet, along with the ongoing capture (or destruction) of news media, have given authoritarians potential control beyond anything Il Duce and Uncle Adolf saw in their wildest dreams. Enjoy.

Tech billionaires have lined up behind the current administration? You mean like George Soros, Michael Bloomberg, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Mark Cuban, Mark Zuckerberg, Tim Cook and many, many others?
