WWI Bi-plane comics Anyone Remember these comic,
« on: May 18, 2025, 06:15:06 AM »

I was born 1954. It must have been somewhere 50's or 60's.
Off and on over the years I've searched for these old comics. I'm 71 now, but remembering I started looking at the pictures and they actually encouraged me to learn to read just to read comics stories. I especially enjoyed the comics because we were too poor to afford them, but a uncle that had 2 teens bought them for his children and I was the youngest of three in my family that enjoyed the stacks he brought when they were finished.
I can find later war stories - P-51's. 12'O'Clock High. Jets, whatever.
But these books, nothing so far.
I can't recall any of the publisher's. Just certain bits here and there.
One example was a biplane landing atop a German dirigible. A soldier climbing out of a hatch on top and the pilot and the German standing on the top shootine at each other then duking it out.
Maybe this was a series, because I recall reading the stories too often.
Does anyone have a clue or know what I'm looking for. I admit I haven't searched every item on the site. I start looking, see something interesting, get caught up with it ... :P

Welcome, Willow 207! Bowers here, and I may be able to help. It sounds to me like "Lt. Steve Savage, Baloon Buster". This group can't share DC comics but, for your own info, this character first appeared in issue 112, "All-American Men of War" in 1966. Sadly, he only lasted four or five issues. The art was by the master of aircraft renderings, Russ Heath. Sometimes, the backup story also featured WW1 biplane action.
We do have some "Fightin' Air Force " and "US Air Force" from Charlton, (mostly WW11 and jets), "Wings" from Fiction House , and more, so just dig in! If you find anything you like, let us know! We have a section in the forum for comments, or just leave a comment on the book's download page. Good luck! Cheers, bowers

Thank you very much. I appreciate any information regarding this subject. Normally I can do an online search and "eventually" find enough information to come to a happy conclusion, or over time stumble onto something. For me this subject is my "bigfoot" search.
I was so young and as I commented, the youngest in the family, my sister closest in age to me was 10 years my senior, so no one was interested enough to read the comic books.
Even before I began 1st grade I could spend hours happily leafing through all the comics my uncle dropped off, so maybe I remember the comics so fondly and am just imaging there were almost monthly issues of those World War I comics. :)
To this day I can still see the red planes, the black planes, checkerboard colors, the round target shapes, the leather helmets, etc.
I still have a fondness for a movie with these planes, just to see them, they always make me smile.
Oh, well. Tomorrow is another day. I'll continue to keep my eyes open.
Again, thank you for your post.

I forgot to mention that EC comics (which we also can't share) had a five issue series called "Aces High", featuring mainly WW1 dogfights.
Are you aware of the Grand Comics Database? No down loads, you can look up titles, subjects, artists, etc. You can find it at-  comics.org   Tally-ho and happy hunting! Cheers, bowers
