Golden Age Female Superheroes List
« on: August 26, 2008, 01:28:33 AM »

I'm trying to figure out all the female superheroes (or at least masked crime fighters). I'd love to know more, especially ones that weren't swallowed up by Marvel or DC. Note, I'm leaving off the umpteen jungle girl characters.

My list so far-

  • Black Canary
  • Black Cat
  • Black Fury / Miss Fury
  • Black Widow (sort of a superhero)
  • Bulletgirl
  • Doll Girl
  • Fantomah
  • Golden Girl
  • Hawkgirl
  • Invisible Scarlett O'Neil
  • Kitten (Cat-Man's Sidekick)
  • Lady Luck
  • Mary Marvel
  • Miss America (all of them)
  • Miss Masque
  • Miss Victory
  • Namora
  • Nelvana of the Northern Lights
  • Phantom Lady (All of them)
  • Spider Queen
  • Spider Widow
  • Sun Girl
  • Venus
  • Wildfire
  • Wonder Woman
  • The Woman in Red
  • Yankee Girl

Who am I forgetting?

I think we had something similar to this list, but it might have been eaten in the Great Crash.

I would add:
Diana (from YellowJacket)
Blonde Phantom
Namorita (if she counts)
Red Tornado

Of course there are more...just ask Yoc & Phabox.

I swear I put Blonde Phantom on that list. Weird. Must have disappeared when I alphabetized. Anyway... I'm not familiar with Namorita. I take it she's a different character from Namora?

My modern Marvel history is a bit fuzzy around the edges but as I recall when Namorita was first introduced in Sub-Mariner_050 June 1972 she was said to be the 'daughter' of the late Namora.

Later I believe this was retconed making her a 'clone' of the original Namora but knowing Marvel I expect this may have been altered again since then.

A Check look a the list of lady crime fighters I notice a lack of Batgirls ( three at the last count ?),Batwomen ( at least two) and Supergirls.

also how about ?

Black Angel

Black Orchid ( about four of these)

Black Phantom

Black Venus

Blonde Bomber

Blue Lady

Butterfly

Lady Blackhawk

There were at least three Black Widows.

And that just for starters, check back and i'll add more to this list when I have the time.

I'm not sure Venus ever really worked as a Superhero, at least until the 70's when she showed back up.

In the "odd but neat" category, I found a copy of Lana #4 for 6 bucks a few weeks ago.  Not the sort of thing I would normally grab; but how am I supposed to pass up a late 40's Marvel at that price?  To my surprise, it had an early Venus story in it; but back then Venus was a humor strip of the Millie/ Tessie school.  If you didn't know the character's background you would never have guessed it from that story.  They never could decide what sort of comic Venus was.  I would love to see the Everett issues...

Was it really the same Venus or just another character with that name? There were four different Black Fury characters- two men, one woman and a horse.

Same, it matches the characters from the origin of Venus story.  From what I've read about Venus it was one of the most mixed up titles Marvel ever did, changing formats at a high rate of speed.

Good choices, but they are all Silver Age.

Discovered another one. Timely/Marvel's Patriot had a short-lived sidekick, Miss Patriot.

And, of course, there's nature boy. Sure, you say, he wasn't a girl... but just look at him... tight little shorts that are totally smooth in the front. I think Nature Boys Don't Cry. :D

Claire Voyant(?)

I don't think I would count her. She was a psychic detective, not a superhero.

Found another one who's on the line of superhero/not superhero-

Mother Hubbard from Bull's Eye Comics (Charlton) was a crime-fighting witch. If Marvel can have a Scarlet Witch... ;)

Mother Hubbard was in fact a Chesler/Dynamic Comics character rather then Charlton.

Never thought of compairing her with the Scarlet Witch, one things certain Wanda was a LOT easier on the eyes then Mother Hubbard who would have made Agatha Harkness look like a Beauty Contest Winner !!! ::)

How about Merry, the Girl of 1000 Gimmicks?  She took over the Star Spangled strip in the book of the same name.

They call you Brainster for a reason because I totally overlooked Merry!  ;D ;D ;D ;D

PS: I see a lot of guests printing this section -- why don't some of you join and participate in the discussion? This conversation stopped short and there is a lot more we could discuss, so how about prodding us along so that you can print out an even larger section?  ;D
