Hey guys! :) Question about copyright?
« on: August 20, 2015, 04:53:42 PM »

Hey guys! im new here, but im sure ive met some of you at this/last years SDCC!

im a (fairly new) graphic designer for a home decor company- and i was wondering if any of these are free for commercial use? im not wanting to reprint any comics as a whole, but i design scarves, glass trays, coasters, etc. and if i was wanting to use a portion of a panel- (mostly kissing panels from romance comics/horror comics) would i be able to do so without us getting sued?

i regrettably didn't go to college for this, so i don't know much about copyright laws :(

I feel really stupid for asking, but help would be appreciated! thank you! :)

& so glad to be apart of this community :)
thanks!

If it is public domain it is free to use. That does not mean that someone might not make some claims. If you stay away from the Captain Marvel (DC) or Archie MLJ stuff and the characters currently being used by Dynamite then you should (non lawyer opinion from research) safe. Technically even those should be safe but who wants a hassle, but if you are using panels from public domain works themselves they are very safe.
