The Five Best Selling Golden Age Superheroes?
« on: December 06, 2008, 03:08:22 AM »

I have read that Captain Marvel was #1 in sales during the 1940s. Joe Simon believes Captain America outsold them all. Asking my golden age raised parents resulted in Superman and Plastic Man being the champions.

I do not know if there are stats that could confirm what five superheroes were the best sellers or not. So, the next best thing is to ask for your opinions.

My guess is Captain Marvel, Superman, Captain America, Batman and Sub-Mariner.

The problem is the 40's were a long time; even if we have records how do we average them over the entire period?  I'm pretty sure Superman and Captain Marvel were on top at different points; beyond that I have no idea.

To compound the problems some had their own titles but appeared as main features in another. Were they the reason for the sales of another title or did some buy it for another feature. I am sure that some people bought Action to read Zatara more than Superman. Not many but some. And what about dual feature books like World's Finest?

For an article by Mark Carlson (the same one for whom I've named the "Carson Comics" section of my list), check out http://www.nostalgiazone.com/doc/zine/05_Q1/funnybusiness.htm

It'll bring some hard facts to the table.

On a quick side note since the term 'facts' jogged my memory, I had sent an email to the address you gave a while back of an acquaintance/associate of yourn concerning the possibility of establishing a rough estimate of the number of pre 1955 titles/issues
and haven't received a response.

It's not really a biggy but one of those gnawing questions I'd like to have answered if possible. Thanks
