Issue date: 6 Aug 1957 • Cover art: Enrico De Seta • IFC: film still of David Niven and Edmund Purdom in "The King's Thief" (1956). On the cover, the artist has based D'Artagnan on Walter Abel in the 1935 RKO film. The scroll on the title cel conceals the figure of the queen (who doesn't appear in this story) and the third musketeer. An oddity in Millar Watt's artwork: On page 18 King Louis has lost his beard and gained a wig - the artist appears to have momentarily confused him with the Sun King. For his admirers it's regrettable that Millar Watt never painted a Musketeers cover for this series, alongside his Robin Hood, Dick Turpin and Captain Blood covers. He should have done Claude Duval and Rob Roy as well.
