This looked different – from Random 12, a post-war French comic. Beautiful pencils in Fred, the Champion, a story that begins as a simple local boy makes good in a cycling race but then segues neatly into a tale of lost treasure in south-east Asia.
I’ve never seen anything quite like In the Cavern of the Gods, a story of inuit shamans, living mammoths and inter-tribal rivalry – terrific. I particularly liked the reference to the intricate face masks worn by shamans – there are some fine examples in the museum in Boulogne.
