The Twelve: Spearhead
« on: March 11, 2010, 12:48:50 AM »

Hey gang!

Lo and behold, a one-shot in this mythic (most like never to be actually completed) series arrived in most comics outlets today.

I will report on it later tonight.

For what it is worth, there is a promo for #9 of the regular series in the back of the book, however, I will believe it when I actually see it.

I'm definitely interested in hearing more about this.   I was lucky enough to visit a shop that carried the first 8 issues for cover price, and I found the series to be pretty interesting.  I am quite disappointed that Marvel allowed this series to linger for so long.  It only shows that the company doesn't care about a series that doesn't directly impact the "Marvel Universe" ... you wouldn't see something like this happen with "Siege".

Hi gang! Just finished up what is one of the best GA related reads of this year!

The cast of The Twelve are indeed in this one-shot, but there is oh so much more!

This is a who's who of continuity and fanboy awesome! Additional guests stars include Nick Fury! The Whizzer, Miss America, Captain America, The Human Torch to represent the Invaders sans Bucky, Toro, and Sub-Mariner.

The Destroyer appears, along with The Blazing Skull, The Black Marvel, Red Raven, Union Jack, and The Patriot (who suddenly has super human strength), The Vision, Blue Diamond, The Angel; The Red Skull even pops up!  I most likely missed a few additional characters, but you get the idea.

Continuity wise, this particular story should be considered a starting point for those who have missed the first eight issues of the regular series. However, in it, we learn the fate of Cap and Bucky, are reminded of the What If (for those who remember Vol. 1 #4 of that series) continuity of WW2's end and its meaning for the Marvel Universe we currently know.

I encourage every Golden Age junkie to run out and secure The Twelve: Spearhead for their collection. It will never be worth a cool one-million, but it is worth the $3.99US price tag.

B.

PS: SUN GIRL  appears in this month's Marvel Adventures #21 for all who are interested in knit-picky geekness.   ;D

Yeah, I just finished this and found it be really good - I was expecting some of the dreariness that plagued The Twelve to bring it down, but it seemed to evade that while keeping a more mature tone to the story. With that said, there was more of the ultra-violence than I tend to want to see in a comic featuring spandex clad heroes. :(

Loved seeing the Blue Diamond (and other Liberty Leaguers) in the comic! The art was top notch (much better IMO than we saw on another higher profile comic featuring Golden Ager heroes - Avengers vs Invaders...)

Between this, The Marvels Project and the Human Torch mini-series, Marvel seems to be doing a better job in using their GA heroes...

The saddest thing to me was seeing the ad for The Twelve issue 9 with JMS listed as writer. :(

Yeah, Spearhead definitely showed that he isn't needed on this series past the initial plot/concept, and that Marvel has a decent creator who could probably have finished this series up on his own quite well without JMS.

Just finished reading this issue and it was very good, apart from some of the ultra-violence, as Jim Shelley noted.  Not quite what I want from superheroes either. That apart, I enjoyed seeing all those lesser characters, the art and the story.  Great use of the Phantom Reporter.
