Apparently South Africa decided that the risks of using DDT were far outweighed by the very real tragedy of thousands dying each year due to insect borne diseases.
Before reverting to DDT the hospitals could not keep up with the patient load, afterwards the Malaria wards were nearly empty.

It would be nice to think we learned from our mistakes - but hot on the heels of DDT came Roundup (with shiny new glyphosphate) and as for chlorpyrifos - let's not even go there.

I'm telling you it's lethal to eat vegetables these days - stick to doughnuts
