What a larger-than-life figure the author was. Admiral-Lord Mountevans (real name Edward Evans) began a long naval career commanding a relief vessel for Scott's first Antarctic expedition (1902). He was part of Scott's second and fatal 1910 expedition. As the party's equipment failed and their troubles mounted, Scott sent Evans and two others back to their ship. Evans, snowblind and affected by scurvy, barely survived the journey. In World War I Evans became a hero commanding a destroyer in the Battle of Dover Strait. For the next forty years he piled up promotions and honors, ending up with a peerage. Somehow he found time to write several memoirs and a baker's dozen of juvenile novels including "To Sweep the Spanish Main." And as if THAT wasn't enough, in 1947 Evans led a committee to formalize the rules for UK professional wrestling! He died in 1957, a couple of years after this issue of TPL was published.
