The Spider-man typo
« on: October 11, 2022, 10:35:56 PM »

I know this will be old news for many of you, but I just discovered it and thought it was fun. Yesterday, I bought a facsimile copy of the first issue of 'The Amazing Spider-man' from 1963. In the first story, his secret identity is Peter Parker, but in the second story he's mentioned three times as Peter Palmer. Stan Lee was famous for his alliterative names, but it looks like he misremembered this one.

Yeah, Stan did not have the best memory and he used alliterative names because he thought it would help him remember the names better. Like with the Hulk who is Bruce Banner, except in a Fantastic Four story where he's Bob Banner. In a letter column he declared the Hulk's full name was Robert Bruce Banner to explain that away, but no such luck with Peter Palmer.

Issue 3 of Spider-Man had the hero called Superman in one panel. (Corrected in later reprints.)

There are other fun Stan errors, of course.

Like an issue of X-Men where Jean hands Beast a pair of pliers, but she calls them a screwdriver. (I guess Stan didn't do many home repairs.)

Or the fight where Captain America says on one page how one of them won't be walking out of here, and the next page declares, "and it won't be me!"

I think Marvel actually put out a book with a bunch of the various typos and mistakes that appeared in Marvel Comics up till then.

Thanks for that. Stan had a sense of humour, so maybe he thought the goofs were funny. It's fun to play 'spot the error' or 'spot the lapse in continuity'.

And sometimes the problem can be with an artist's interpretation too. I borrowed a library book recently that had Batman comics from the 1950s, so I don't have it here to refer to. But I seem to recall they mentioned an example of the scriptwriter including a bat (meaning the animal) but the artist drew a baseball bat - or maybe it was the other way round. I'll have to search for that one and get back to you. But always fun to spot.

He wasn't the only one, remember all the women with the initials LL that Superman was involved with? And there were more of them than you'd think!
And Stan?
Clearly the man needed an editor.  :-X

cheers!

I think the first 2 or 3 were a coincidence, then it became a running gag. Also not just women, I believe giving Luthor the first name Lex was the creators playing into the LL meme.

Yes, I always wondered why they decided to call Superman's teen sweetheart Lana Lang when it sounded so much like Lois Lane. Lots of scope there for him to get tongue-tied and experience the wrath of both women  :D

Try at least 4 women. Back in the 60's he was seriously involved with a mermaid, Lori Lemaris
Quote
Lori Lemaris, Superman's college sweetheart.
and then there was

Lyla Lerrol, Superman's love affair on Krypton.

Don't even ask.

The count here, believe it or don't, is 38!
So where did it start? maybe here?
Leonore Lemmon was the fiancée of actor George Reeves!
Go figure!

Wow, thanks for that. I recognise a couple of those names, but I didn't know the LL thing was so pervasive. Lucky he didn't like K or we'd have the Kardashians in there for sure  :D
