Darna (Filipina superheroine) Origin Story
« on: May 29, 2023, 06:47:07 PM »

For anyone who's interested, I've translated the Darna origin story, from Pilipino Komiks #78 (May 27, 1950). The story was written by Mars Ravelo, and illustrated by Nestor Redondo.

https://multoghost.wordpress.com/2023/05/29/darna-filipina-superhero/

The blog post includes links to PDF and CBZ versions of the translation, as well as to the original scan on CB+. I'm no expert on editing comic book images, so apologies for the occasional muddiness.

Mostly I did this just so I could read the story myself. I mistranslated Darna's origin planet as Mars, rather than Marte, but hopefully I didn't mess up anything else too much.

Enjoy.

Thanks so much for this translation! I've seen a lot of Filipino comics in their original form. It's been frustrating not to understand the language. Pilipino isn't one of those languages an English reader can fake his way through by educated guessing. While on the subject: there are many websites hosting scans of old comics from various countries, but I've yet to find one dedicated to komiks from the Philippines. Does anybody know of one?

I came across some blogs with scans while researching my own blog post; but of course I can't find them again. But I did turn this up just now:

https://filipinokomiks.com/  -- I'm not sure if the site is still being updated: the last Facebook post was in 2022. Many, if not most, of the entries appear to be single stories by a specific writer, Nita Eden So.

BUT: the site's Darna entry has the origin story, as well as the Darna vs Valentina story in what looks to be the correct order (the version of Darna vs Valentina that's on CB+ (https://comicbookplus.com/?dlid=64328) does not have the issues/chapters in the correct order). So there's that...
