The Rarest Harvey Ever?
« on: December 15, 2010, 10:24:50 PM »

Hi, I found a Harvey Comics comic series that can't find any info on called "Drago Comics? The only place I have seen it is in an the top half (the bottom half is in ad for Black Cat Comics) of the first of four ads in the back of Speed Comics 043(1946). In the ad it is in-between All-New Comics and Nutty Comics with Bruce Gentry above it. The cover is yellow, the title is red, and the lettering is ether Old English Text MT, Algerian, or Academy Engraved LET. Does anyone know anything about this comic?  Is it for real, is it mistake by the artist or even...  :o an unpublished book? This could be just that, as there was an ad that seems to have a similar situation regarding Boy Heros #1 in Front Page Comics. And then theirs this: http://www.christies.com/LotFinder/lot_details.aspx?intObjectID=2329595

Below is a picture of said ad:

I'm thinking the book "Drago" you asked about is the same as "Flyin' Fools", (see the same ad above) which never appeared in the public hands except as a reprinted book from Eclipse as "Bob Powell's Timeless Tales", March 1989  for the first time with the same cover except for the title name change.

A few others from said ad never made the grade either: Bruce Gentry (as a Harvey book), and Boy Heroes besides the other two mentioned above.

Would hope that answers your question and anyone else that see the other 3 books that never saw print at the time of the printing of the above ad.

Drago was a short-lived Sunday strip by Burne Hogarth that he did between his two runs on the Tarzan strip.  Drago was a Gaucho-an Argentinian cowboy.  The strip only ran for about a year (from November 1945 to November 1946).
Harvey may have signed on to do a comic book reprinting what they hoped would be hit strip from a top artist and then canceled it before it even got off the ground as the strip crashed and burned.

The complete run of Drago was reprinted by Tony Raiola's Pacific Comics Club about 25 years ago.

That book (Race to the Moon #1) is up here, as I scanned and edited it from my own copy for everyones enjoyment. Also Race to the Moon #2 and #3 have been scanned too to complete this series.
