As you can see, complex.
The earlier MLJ Superheroes are in the public domain, which is why we feature them here.
Here is a fairly complete list.
Characters who were originally published or appeared in comics published by MLJ, the company that later would be known as Archie Comics.

But only the Golden age work is PD, not the more recent versions like the DC versions.
