The First Christmas in 3D (Fiction House one-shot, 1953)
https://comicbookplus.com/?dlid=55534

Odd cover.
The redheaded character in the animal skin, holding the Lamb, didn't come from the near East.

I wonder why they thought that this particular story would sell in 3D?

You can follow the narrative through the words, the balloons. I think the 3D detracts from the art.
As a Christian, I can attest that the narrative is accurate (from the sources) and not embellished in any way.
For me the best part is the map of Mary's travels.
Nice choice QQ.

Hi Panther

Like you, I was pleased to find a story of the first Christmas that was an accurate account of the Biblical sources, though I agree that the red-haired shepherd may not have been depicted accurately. Then again, there was  fair bit of intermarriage about the Jews in the Old Testament, so it's possible. I can't recall a recorded sighting of the first red-haired male :D

I thought maybe the 3D idea was to get in on the craze and maybe attract some kids to read it when they wouldn't have read the straight story? Worth a try, I guess.

Carols Book
This is a useful item, glad we have saved it on CB+ - for the wraparound cover alone.
Interesting that the composers and origins of the carols are listed.
Inside back cover lists other songbooks, 'Darnfool Ditties' looks interesting.

There are lots of interesting things under the 'Odds and End' section, including a Christmas section. Too bad they didn't include the guitar chords, but I guess they took it from hymn books, so you can't have everything! :D

Cheers

Hi everyone

I hope you've all had a great start to the New Year. Thank you all for your contributions this fortnight. I don't have a lot to add other than what has already been said.

I thought the Midshipman story from Pep Comics captured the spirit of Christmas, with the sailors giving up some of their shore leave to bring happiness to others.

I was pleased to find the 3D copy of the First Christmas for two reasons--First, I thought the 3D idea was a novel one. I hadn't come across these types of comics before, though I can see that many of you are well-familiar with them. Second, I was pleased to find a comic that actually told the story at the heart of Christmas. Whether it meshes with your own beliefs or not, it still tells the origins of the Christian celebration that we know as Christmas and which many of us celebrate. The art was also quite good.

I hadn't come across the Richard Diamond radio show before (or anything about that character), and I enjoyed the retelling of 'A Christmas Carol'. I thought the voice cast was top-notch. But as I mentioned earlier, one of the treats for me was listening to the original ads at the beginning and end of the show, that touted the benefits of smoking. How times have changed. It reminded me of the early 'I Love Lucy' show which was sponsored by Philip Morris cigarettes. So every now and then, Desi and Lucy would pop out to tell the viewers how great that brand was. Interestingly, Desi Arnaz later died of lung cancer. Here's an example of one of their commercials.

I just included the Christmas carol book for interest value, though it also has some good illustrations, especially the wrap-around cover. I wonder how many people kept this book aside to use at Christmas? Believe it or not, I still have a Christmas carol booklet that came with the Australian Women's Weekly in the 1970s. I still use it, though it's getting a little shabby. I bought another 'proper' Christmas carol music book later, but I didn't like the arrangements as well as the ones in the magazine insert, so I still use the magazine.

I think we have SuperScrounge up for next fortnight, so I'll look forward to that. Have a great New Year everyone.

Cheers

Yes indeedy. Inspired by 'The Seekers', I started learning guitar when I was 7. I still have the Seekers' songbook I got for my 9th birthday  :D
