Favourite comic you've stumbled across here?
« on: June 27, 2013, 03:35:56 PM »

So what has been the favourite comic people have stumbled across here? By 'stumbled across' I mean something you probably weren't familiar with beforehand, or at least gone looking for - I'm sure many fans of Captain Marvel or Sheena or other top tier characters sought out this place for those in particular but I'm more interested in the accidental discoveries.

For me I have to say I love Starlet O'Hara, a comic that I never knew existed until now.  It's funny, fast paced, the art has real real bounce and the heroine and her co-star are actually pretty likable.  Only a shame it had such a short run.

Anyone else discover any hidden gems here?

I was aware of most of the publishers in the Comic Book section and their output, before I came here. So while it's a treat to see those comics, it's not exactly a surprise. However, while I knew about Canada's Superior Comics, I thought that they just re-published American content. It was a genuine surprise to find their three original horror anthologies--including one of the most unusual comic book stories I've ever read, "Happily Dead" from MYSTERIES [WEIRD AND STRANGE] No. 8. Such a good story that I bought a copy of that issue for myself.

I was surprised to find the wealth and variety of non U.S. superheroes. Many that are not at GCD

As far as the N. American comics on here are concerned, lots, as I wasn't that familiar with some of the companies and titles.  I was chuffed to find Gunmaster (Charlton) with all that lovely PAM artwork.
And so many others with Jesse Marsh art.  Always been a fan after finding a copy of John Carter of Mars yonks ago.  A number of western titles have beautiful Kinstler covers and are worth searching out for that alone.
Really, it was CB+ that got me into non-superhero comics, as I'd been a superhero nut forever.  Here I discovered some great detective mags, Kerry Drake with Andriola art, for instance and some wonderful romance comics.
Excuse the rambling, not very precise, but I always have trouble settling on just one thing.

Ah, now my addiction to superhero an MMM comics gets tickled again.  Really we've only scratched the surface of British and European heroes, many of them being non P.D.  But there are some truly interesting characters on the site and it's certainly more than worth a look in the British/ Aus. and Foreign sections. Check out the lovely Italian stuff that mr goldenage is uploading, some of which I didn't know about and I'm supposed to be an expert!  Doesn't matter how much you think you know, there's always more sneaking up and surprising you.  (If this were a smiley, it would say, "Humble")

Ahh...and just you wait....with nearly 70 books purchased in the last 45 days there are going to be lots of goodies posted in the months to come. Not to mention all those spanish/latino books I have that still needs to be scanned. Italy certainly turned out to be an unexpected gold mine for me as I had no Idea that Italy had such a deep and rich history in comics during the golden age. Lucky me. I love this stuff. Now the rest of my year is being spent on Italy and comics/fumetti and writing all things Italy for (hopefully) your enjoyment as much as it is for my own, and I have to say I have had a blast doing this and reading these fine comics.
