comic file utility - extract comic covers
« on: January 01, 2013, 09:58:11 PM »

I am thinking of releasing a freeware software program that allows you to extract comic covers from comic files (cbr, cbz, pdf)

The first release software of the software is available now.  I am looking into a web site for it, but in the meantime I could make it available to you if you are interested in using it.  Email me for info and Ill provide you with a link

* Create wallpaper images to use as a screen saver or desktop background.  Set the background and screen saver to change the image every few minutes for an interested computer monitor to show off your comic collection
* Extract full images or thumbnails
* Extract cover only or all pages
* Supports CBR, CBZ, PDF
   Other formats are under investigation.  Let me know if you have any particular formats in mind.  I would like to know if anyone is interested in CBA, CB7
* Supports Microsoft Windows.  Apple OSX version will be released if enough interest
* Freeware
* No malware

* GOT IDEAS ?  I would like to add more features.  What other things could a Comic Utility program do ?  Let me know your thoughts.

email me at cstevenspro@gmail.com if you would like to download the software, feedback or questions

The idea of keeping track of digital collections is interesting. What about alphabetised thumbnails? Go into a digital collection and get thumbnail pages of what is in there.

>> Alphabetized thumbnails

Im not 100% sure of what you mean but it probably does this already.
The extracted image file name is based on the original file name.

You have some control over the directories and file names that it creates

If you extract only the cover from MYCOMIC.CBR you get a file named MYCOMIC.CBR.JPG

You can either
        A) flatten the extracted files into a single directory
    or B) recreate the original directories

You can also create a new folder for each file, so if you extracted every page from 100 comics you would get 100 directories, each one containing every page from one comic

The program is ready to run now if anyone wants it

It currently supports CBZ, CBR and PDF

I might add more formats if they are popular enough
How popular are other formats ... CBA, CB7 etc ?

Everything that I have is either CBR or CBZ.  Ive never seen a CBA or CB7

I do not see any need for other formats. I think I have run across a CB7 somewhere once. I would be interested in giving it a try

The first beta version is ready for download here

http://sourceforge.net/projects/comicutility/files/

The user interface needs to be improved, but the features should all work correctly

I expect that it will guess the cover page incorrect for some comics as it is very difficult to determine.  I will try and improve that in the next few releases.

Let me know if any issues, feedback etc

Question.

Opened your program and played around for a bit but, I am curious what does yours do that lets say ComicRack or CDisplayEX, or any of the other viewers.  All of them allow you to extract page by page.

Hello ComicFan1.  I don't understand why I would need a new tool to extract a cover from a file.  CDisplay ex will bring up a file and a right click offers a file option where I can save the page I'm looking at.  I assume I'm missing something here. :-[
