Hi
« on: February 23, 2014, 03:59:48 PM »

Hey, I'm GoldenIsBest and with the recent state of mainstream comics and a growing interest in the Silver and Golden Age, I decided to try and look for websites where I could find Golden Age comics and read them. I am also a fan of Grant Morrison and a lot of his comic Flex Mentallo is a celebration of the fact that although the Golden Age is now seen by some as wacky and irrelevant it was in fact archetypal and if not for a lot of golden age heroes like The Spider and Captain Marvel we might not even have the heroes we do now.
At the moment, I am reading the"Black Magic" comic and it's been really good so far. If anyone has any recommendations of other comics to read, I am definitely open to hearing them.
P.s. thanks much to the admin team for approving my application.  :)

Happy to have you here Golden.
I'm not sure I'm the right person to recommend other titles to you as I am NOT a G. M fan.  While agreeing with you about the important role G.A. characters had in forming today's comics and characters, I struggle to see the relevance to Flex Mentallo, which seems, to me, like a lot of Mr. Morrison's work, weak, self-serving and done as much for effect and shock value as anything else.  Please excuse the rant.
Now, the important thing is to dive in and check some comics.  There is so much and your job as a member is to enjoy them, post any comments on them and, hopefully, join in the forum.
Glad you didn't mention Mark Millar - now that would really have set me going ;)

Welcome Gold. If you like Black Magic you may like the ACE horror titles as they are not as gory as some of the others. More like Black Magic. I also recommend you join our reading group. That way you get variety.

Well, Paw Broon I'd rather not argue with you but I strongly disagree that Morrison's work is at all "self serving" and if it wasn't for "Flex Mentallo: Man of Muscle Mystery", which like I said is a homage to all things Silver and Golden Age, I probably wouldn't even have any real interest in websites like these.
Mark Millar's done a lot to distance his "style of writing" from Morrison, to the point where Millar is simply a poor imitation of Garth Ennis, so frankly I don't think that comparison really works at all.
In any case, I've been enjoying the website so far and recently started reading "Hit Comics". It's pretty good so far.

Hi Golden, I'm glad Flex brought you here and to other similar sites.  I mentioned M. Millar because he and G.M. come from the same comic fan background and I was aware of them both from early on in the Glasgow comics scene.  No comparison of work intended.  I simply am not a fan of their products.  It all comes down to personal taste and, in many ways, my taste in comics is often seen as a bit odd, if not downright bad at times.  I'm also really pleased you got back on this.  Not that I'm changing my mind. ;)  There's so much to enjoy for all of us and I hope you continue to share your views and comments with the rest of us.  It makes for a well-rounded forum.

I don't know what you guys are talking about.  I love the golden age because it brings me back to my childhood. I don't remember all my heroes. But thanx to you ,I can return to the yesteryear. Thanx a zillion.

Hello hlkermitt1 and welcome to CB+.  You don't really have to know what we're gibbering on about. :-[  In my case I was just airing my prejudices.  Your statement about G.A. bringing you back to your childhood is so appropriate.  There is so much to remind you of that time and also piles more to discover.  Dig in. And have a look at the forum.  If you have comments, ideas or just want to join in the reading group, we'd love to hear from you.
