The Bill Nolan Disks - Now on GAC
« on: September 04, 2008, 12:21:46 AM »

Hi Gang,
Some time back last year we had a discussion that led to talk of Bill Nolan's old 'Pure Excitement' website and the disks that he sold.  Seems they were burned on less than reliable disks that over time would die even though they looked just fine on the surface.  Well Bill heard about this and even though he's long since stopped updating the site or selling his disks he was Nice enough to share all of his disks on his site that you can still see here:

Bill liked to share single stories mostly sorted by character or publisher and did a great job of building the hobby up on the net inspiring our own srca1941 (aka SteveRogers) and Richard B. to start sites of their own.  Steve's old 'Golden Age Great' and Richard's 'Good Guys and Gals of the Goldenage' no longer exist but some of their fine work can be found here on GAC as well. I have fond memories of both.

Well I thought it might help everyone here, especially the scanners, to integrate Bill's PE disks into the GAC collection.  It should also give the newbies out there a good chance to see the scans and perhaps take a deeper look at Bill's old site on the link above.  I'm sure there are still stories on there that haven't made it over here to the GAC site.

So here are a list of the books added!

Happy to share DM.
You might want to check the online disks - there were a handful of stories with larger scans than the ones you used in your fiche+paper uploads already on the site.  To avoid confusion I didn't add those unless they were a lot bigger.  Usually they were about 500 pixels in yours and 750 on the disks.

Thanks for the posting, Yoc.  And Bill, wherever he is.  Pure Excitement was largely geared to a dial-up world; but when I first ran into it years ago I thought it was cool as hell.  And I regret not having the brains or courtesy to thank Bill for it back then.

I hate to complain about a neat posting, but:

The Target v3 n5 (Spacehawk only) actually has a reprint of the story from v3 n7, which is an issue we already have on the site C2C.

The Target v3 n9 seems to be missing page 6 of the Spacehawk story.

Hey, if those are all that I goofed up I'm thrilled!

Sadly I don't have the missing Spacehawk pg 6 from Target v3 n9.  So if someone else out there has it please let me know.

I've removed the Target v3 n5 duplicate as well.

I had a site for a little while back in those days and I think, if my old memory holds, Bill gave my site credit for the inspiration to start his.  Bill was the editor of  the GAAPI for a time where ten of us would each send in scans of a GA story and he would compile them and send the whole thing to each with a cool cover he made.

Interesting Narf.
What year was that all happening?

I came along just at the tail end of 'Golden Years' and 'Good Guys and Gals...'  I also saw the last (so far) update of 'HooHaa!' which I understand was another fun site.  I found most of them in the links sections of various Yahoo Groups devoted to comics.  Sadly a majority of the Yahoo comics groups seem to have gone mostly silent.  But I'm still devoting time to monthly updates on the Fiction House Factory group that Phabox started years ago.

When it comes to what year for something my wife has a grasp I do not.  My best estimate is somewhere in the past :P  I am trying in vain to remember the name of my site.  I am pretty sure that Amazing Man was my first story put up.

Yes I remember HooHaa and Bill's PEC Sites. In fact it was Mr Nolan that intro'd me to my former website partner Darrin Wiltshire. We started Good Guys n Gals in December 1997 and the Greats Reprint site in 1999. Good Guys ran for 22 issues and two specials over 5 years and Greats ran 11 issues, and 8 CD's worth of scans sold to loyal readers and on ebay. I finally pulled the plug because of mine and Darrin's health issues, personal issues and well..... lack of enthusiasim on the part of the readership. Also it was a real let down to see the work we'd done used by others as their own work without as much as a nod to our hard work. Accolades to those who did (you all know who you are!) and did not give credit where credit was due. I tried to restart this year with Darrin, but Darrin wasn't up to the task and my own webhosting skills were/are non existant. However I am self teaching myself the ways of the website creations and hope by the time I get my new computer system, reload all my stuff comics and otherwise, I then hope to start resuming my yahoo groups and eventually launch my new website solo. A BIG BIG thanks goes out to Bill Nolan for his support (I too was a memeber of that APAI along with Narfstar and Darrin W plus others such as Black Lion) and Joe Lovace of HooHaa whom both these gentlement were and still are a great inspiration to myself. Just my 2 cents worth.

And a big 'good luck' with the new PC and future website!
