Can a kind Englishman please explain the riddle "When is a dentist like an umpire/When he pulls out the stumps"? I understand the dentist end of it but American umpires don't pull out stumps (???). Thanks.

I put the answer on the book as a comment .. but it's to do with cricket!

BTW the early Rovers have a "jokes" page right at the beginning. They are such bad schoolboy jokes that I have plans to OCR them and put them on a page somewhere. They are truly dreadful ...lol
