NOTE -
I've given this a topic of it's own.  I just love to see photos from magazines, newspapers, movies, whatever that include comics.  I've collected a few over the years.  Once we've finished talking about the Life picture below I'll post some more to talk about down the road.  And if anyone has any others to share this is the place to do it!

Just in case anyone thinks Red Band is so strange that it must be a hoax or practical joke, here's proof that it was sold alongside Fawcett and Nedor books at least:

Jim, HP,

It appears that that web site doesn't like off-site links to their graphics.

I was able to display the image by first going to the root web (http://boards.collectors-society.com) and then pasting the following at the end of the URL: attachments/70163.jpg

YMMV.

I'm still finding my way through the site and I was fascinated to see the photo of the comics stand.  My kingdom for a time machine.
Anyway this stuff about Rural Home set me off and I dug out my copy of Liberty Comics 12, which carries a Black Hood story and is dated April 1946. The indicia also numbers it as Vol 2, no. 4, published by Green Publishing, Chicago.  The indicia is inside front cover.  More confusing, to me at any rate, though you all probably know about this, is my copy of Miss Liberty Comic Book.  Dated, on the cover, 1945-issue.  Although the cover shows a back view of Steel Sterling, the insides are an issue of Shield- Wizard. Don't know which one. The inside front cover shows the contents and tells us - Copyright 1944 Published by Burten Magazine Distributing co, Chicago.
On a vaguer connection, I have a copy of a Canadian coverless comic, (first story - Golden Lad signed Meskin ) and published by Superior Publishers.  When I bought this years ago, I also bought from the same table what I thought was another Canadian title _ Bogey Man.  Now I  realise what I have is a coverless copy of Red Band 1 or 2 (it's the origin story)
Don't know if this is a help, hindrance or just makes me look a bit slow.

Aren't these books fun?  Any chance you can scan that Liberty 12?  That's one issue that's eluded me so far.  And how strange that after all these years your coverless Canadian book turned out to be Mexican!

Henry, I'd be happy to scan the book but I'm not sure how.  I've read the instructions for uploading to the site and got lost early on.  Sorry, I'm not very technical.
I've also found my copy of Roly. Poly Comics no.10 (no indicia and containing Steel Sterling and Red Rube).
But as this is available on the Mighty Crusaders website, I don't suppose it's of much interest.

can anyone read the signs in the windows of the store?

Makes me wonder if perhaps it's in Britain as the sign closest to the comic rack seems to read Petrol?a

No, I don't think it's Britain nor do I think the sign reads petrol?a. The blokes trousers don't look right and we didn't have those comics on display and if they were there would also have been a plethora of local comics and story papers.  The 2 blokes also look a bit too well dressed and healthy.  Problem for me is that the 2nd sign looks as if it reads 3 shillings.  There was a sign for shilling just like that one.  Couldn't be Australia or S. Africa?

Paw Boom.  That sign could also read 3 with a double zero underlined which is how many signs in America would write $3.

Your Roly Poly isn't by any chance a Shield Wizard #13 is it?  The first story would be "The Invasion"  That issue is the one that is missing many pages in it's scan.

If you can scan, there are numerous ways to get the scans uploaded to the site.  Don't worry about that at all.  We'll get tehm up if you can scan them.

I think the first sign is either "petrooa" or "petroqa" -- maybe this was a brand name? Also, I think the cost of whatever it is was .89 cents. This establishment had to be some kind of grocery/hardware/newsstand set up...the other sign appears to be advertising something for $3.00...and I think sign before that one is offering something at "5 for $2.??" -- I think this was taken in the USA.

B. overly thinking today...  ;D

FWIW: Here's a copy of the first sign. I don't know what it says, but I think that there is either a small $ to the left of the 8 or the second O might possibly be a G. Either way, there doesn't seem to be any decimal point to indicate

I've tracked down all the comics on the rack.  Here goes:
http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/1926/lifewithcomicscopygg2.jpg

They are all from April or May of 1945 (according to the GCD where I got the cover images from), except Everybody's Comics and Mystery Comics which are from 1944 according to the GCD.  Everybody's Comics took me the longest to track down... I looked through all the titles with Comics in them from 1944 and 1945.

Say, what about the comic on the very top right row?  'Captain... something'
Any ideas or did I miss something?

It's Captain Marvel #46... the same issue appears at the top right, second down from the top on the left and just above the boy's knee.

I'm trying to track down what he's reading... it's not Captain Marvel #46, but that's all I've checked so far.

Stay tuned.

Ok gang,
Here's another picture.  Not nearly as many comics but you should notice a certain very famous comic eventually.

Call me a cynic, but I think that photo has been doctored. If you look at the three Action #1's at the bottom, they look too big compared to the other books & the customer. I also loaded the picture into my graphics program & zoomed in, and if you compare the rightmost two Action covers, the common visible portions are almost identical pixel-for-pixel copies.

Just curious; where did you find this picture originally?

Okay, I am replying to my own message; I just did a bit of Google image searching, and I found several other web sites that posted Yoc's picture. AND... I found a few sites that posted this one:

ah, the plot thickens.
We now have the first appearance of a Changling.

Seeing the apparent absence of comics on that newsstand it would seem to date the pic to before their arrival to the hallowed halls of tabloid print.

I did a little more research, and discovered that photo was taken by Berenice Abbott in 1935. Here's a link to another copy of the photo with some background information:

I would imagine that the later actual arrival of Action #1 was probably displayed in a way similar to the first photo YOC posted. If only they had known.
These old photos are great.
Were there any panelized comic tabloids displayed in that same way in '35?
