Gleason - Charles Biro covers?
« on: February 18, 2017, 07:55:09 AM »

A question.

All of the covers on the Gleason Books are signed by Charles Biro. However, the quality is quite variable and some of them must be by different artists. Anybody know what was going on here?

That is just a case of Charles Biro wanting his name on everything. I'm sure Biro drew earlier covers, but as you observed, on later issues the cover art style and quality varied greatly. My guess is Biro made rough sketches and the final drawings were done by his regular pool of artists. However I'm pretty sure Biro really scripted the interior stories carrying his byline.

The Panther and crashryan are almost certainly right about the covers.  Charles Biro did indeed
like his name on everything.  However, with regard to the stories:

Hubbell, actually ghost-wrote many of the later Daredevil and Crimebuster stories signed by
Charles Biro.

And there

Thanks, mopee, for this information. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Biro didn't write "his" stories. It struck me, back in the day, that Biro signed the Daredevil and Crimebuster tales--the "upstanding" stories--but usually didn't sign Crime Does Not Pay stories. Plausible deniability?
