Lead story is a nice example of the late Sam Glanzman's work from this era.

Agreed. Also the cover is by Glantzman. Sam actually served in the Navy himself. Which is why his strip for DC, USS Stevens is in my personal top ten of all time great comic strips. Its not only a ten for creativity its one of the few strips that is basically autobiographical. Jim Shooter ( of all people) somehow got him to redraw most of it, - I m pretty sure it was redrawn, since it was'nt quite as good as I remembered the original to be - for a Graphic Album for Marvel in the 90's.
Seeing this cover caused me to go through the other issues in this title and there are other Glantzman stories in the series. Worth looking for. Also look at his Combat for Dell.

Dover has published both a collection of Sam's USS Stevens stories for DC and a collection of both of his 1980s graphic novels for Marvel for those interested.
I second the opinion that these are among the best war stories in comics ever done.  Right up there with Kurtzman's war comics for EC.
Some collections of his Charlton and Dell war stories would be welcome here on the site for those of you folks who are working on such projects.
