I find it curious that Brett Halliday does not seem to be mentioned at all in the comic (I skimmed thru it, so if I missed a reference, my bad).

There was a Mike Shayne TV series in 1960 starring Richard Denning, so that may have in part inspired the look of Mike Shayne in the comic (I think in the novels he has red hair), although he actually looks more like Forrest Tucker than Denning.
