This is another of the comics stories I have remembered for decades. I've often noticed comics stories that are loosely based on "legitimate" science fiction stories, but this is the only one I recall that is directly related to a specific (and excellent) story: "A Subway Named Moebius" by A. J. Deutsch, which was published in Astounding Science Fiction in the Dec. 1950 ish. You can, and should, read the original for greater perspective. It's here: http://westongeometry.pbworks.com/w/file/fetch/61244911/SubwayNamedMobius.pdf
"The Train That Vanished" is not a ripoff. In SF, to use another writer's idea is legitimate if you extend it, add something to it. It's a long-running conversation, and Richard Hughes has added his bit to the total. It's funny that I remembered this story in great detail after decades, and the rest of the stories only after re-reading them. An excellent and fondly remembered yarn!
