Henry Cavill The Saint
« on: April 22, 2020, 03:40:33 PM »

Great to see a new Saint movie confirmed with Henry Cavill in the title role (He would also make a great Buck Ryan).

Henry is slowly stitching up all the key hero roles, having already been Superman and Napoleon Solo, he's also due to be Sherlock in the upcoming Enola Holmes movie.

Did anyone see the 2017 Saint TV movie? I missed it - what did you think of it?

I saw the promo for it. Seriously uninpressed. By the numbers thriller. Could have been written by AI. Nothing characteristic of the Saint in that promo.

Awww, he was Solo?  in that awful Man From Uncle film?  Oh dear. It's only recently that I've watched some of the superhero or action films and some of them incl MFU were pretty poor stuff. I'm probably going to get pelters but I do prefer some of the movie serials to the CGI heavy stuff from DC and Marvel.
Wonder Woman was quite good and I liked the 2nd Iron Man movie.  Also the 2 Holmes movies.
As for Holmes, if you want good Sherlock, watch the Jeremy Brett series.

My ex-wife couln't watch Jeremy Brett, said he was too histrionic, over the top. I'll have to go back to that and watch it again.
But -
I do have the Boxed set of the Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce movies, which defined Holmes and Watson for the twentieth century.
And Henry Caville as Solo?  Nobody could replace Robert Vaughn and David McCallum in those roles, but for mine, judging the movie just as a movie, I quite enjoyed it.
On the other hand the Val Kilmer Saint movie is just wrong on every level. I don't even think Kilmer enjoyed making it.
The only way to do a Saint movie is to do it period, and to do it camp or tongue in cheek. Roger Moore was good as the character but I didn't enjoy the show. Neither did Leslie Charteris.
The George Sanders Saint movies are the closest Hollywood has come.
Speaking of Roger Moore,The Persuaders which he did with Tony Curtis is a personal favorite of mine.
Good escapist entertainment that didn't take it self too seriously.

That's my problem with the Rathbone Holmes, they took it out of Holmes era and made it current - for the time the movies were released. I enjoy the Rathbone films despite that and the audios are worth a listen.
The Persuaders is currently running on one of the channels.  Good fun but it looks dated and very non-pc at times. Not necessarily a bad thing.
Other old tv series I occasionally watch are Department S; The Champions; Timeslip; Gideon's Way; Avengers.  I've recently seen a few episodes of Adam Adamant and enjoyed them as much as the poor quality of the prints allowed. Even older, No Hiding Place as I have a dodgy dvd of the surviving episodes and bits and pieces.

I'm also a big fan of those ITC sixties shows - low budget / big effect - the Champions was my favourite (I had the great excitement of being in the same room as Alexandra Bastedo on one occasion - but couldn't get close enough to talk - I did manage to talk to Sir Ian McKellan though (he's surprisingly small)) - but I also liked the Avengers (the Emma Peel years, especially the first series), Department S and Jason King - The Saint of course.

Outside of ITC, I would recommend the Edgar Wallace Mysteries - terrific slice of Britain in the early sixties - available on DVD.
