Today marks Bazza's 111th birthday (though he passed through the veil in 1978)

Not everyone's cup of tea, Basil at least left us with one of the greatest titles in the history of comic books - Brain Bats of Venus. I liked what he did with Spacehawk but I confess I shy away from his more extreme facial images.

Somewhat oddly, Basil was one of the eight elders of Herbert W Armstrong's Worldwide Church of God in the sixties - a non-ecumenical broadly Christian group who produced a free monthly magazine The Plain Truth. Every month, it flopped on our doormat - our area must have been a target for some reason. As a kid, I used to browse through it (I read everything available) and was always amazed at the endlessly positive articles about the Thai royal family - later, I discovered a lot of their funding came from sources linked to the Thai hierarchy. It's a strange world.

My first exposure to Wolverton was the stickers with the impossibly distorted faces with intense color. I actually picked up a Wolverton vinyl record which I haven't listened to. SPACEHAWK has been my moniker on other sites. I love his Richard Dix profile and manly no nonsense powers and sense of justice. In an interview Wolverton said the sci-fi stuff required a lot of serious detail to produce so it was more of a grind than the stuff like POWERHOUSE PEPPER.
